Things to Know About These Programs
Thirty-six US states have a program in place that was created to protect victims of stalking, domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes from offenders who use public records, such as voter or drivers’ license registries, to locate them.
They offer certain protections for survivors of abuse, including a legal “substitute” addresses (P.O. Box, usually) victims can use in place of their physical address, including when an address is required by public agencies. This is true even for driver’s licenses.
Mail is also forwarded to your address as appropriate. This will only work if your stalker does not know where you live now. Check your local laws, which vary state by state. See the listings below to find out if your state has such programs.
