“I never feel lonely if I’ve got a book – they’re like old friends. Even if you’re not reading them over and over again, you know they are there. And they’re part of your history. They sort of tell a story about your journey through life.” ~Emilia Fox
They say reading is good for the soul. I can dig that. I don’t know about you, but for me, reading offers a little escape – a mini vacay, if you will, from the world (and my life in general!) So yeah, I love a good book!
Not only do I indulge myself in great non-fiction, but I’ve got a little guilty pleasure – really compelling fiction (especially when it’s written by such talented writers as the man I’m about to introduce you to now!).
The book is called Dex Territory and it’s by emerging author Mark Aberdeen. Make sure you take note of that name, friends, because he’s going to be one you’ll want to keep up with.
Here’s the basic premise of the book.
Detective Rick O’Shea is an ordinary cop in an extraordinary world of superheroes and super-villains, most of whom are out to kill him, and a few who only want to love him. His job is to keep them from killing each other, made more difficult by a serial killer known as the Reaper. When a riot between superpowers breaks out, and half the downtown area is in ruins, Rick must untangle a web of lies and betrayals, team up with his archenemy, and uncover the true mastermind of the violence before he’s busted down to meter-maid and the entire city is reduced to shambles.
Abereen’s writing is so compelling that you’re just drawn in from the very beginning – and who doesn’t love a good superhero story? This one’s a can’t-miss.
A little more about the book, from the author himself.
Dex Territory is the first in what, I hope, will be a long series of books. These characters have been kicking around my head for a long time and it’s great that they’re finally seeing some play. Dex Territory is an introduction to the world, but don’t think of it as an origin story. These characters have been around and they have a history. Not always a good one.
The first book sets up some of the player in a rollicking, fast paced story that should leave you breathless. You get a glimpse of what the Dex-World is about and it’s a good springboard for what’s to come. The stakes are high, they’re going to get higher.
Rick O’Shea. He’s a cop, a police detective. He’s the guy in over his head. He’s what happens when a regular guy goes against people with super-powers. He has to stop the killers, or break up the fights and he has to use his wits to survive an average day.
Martin Steel. A private investigator and Dex known as Phantasm. He’s Rick’s friend, he knows things. He knows things he shouldn’t. He’s an ex-spook, but it isn’t clear which side he was spying for.
Pink Panther. She was a celebrity. She’s beautiful, she’s powerful, she’s an icon. She gave it all up. She consults for the police department and wants to help. She wants to be in love, she wants a normal life, but her life can never be normal.
The Reaper. A super powered serial killer responsible for the deaths of a string of drug dealers. He has an agenda and Rick is trying to stop him, but are their purposes aligned?
Jonathan Ford. CEO UltraGen he’s cleaning up the mess left by Gentech, the company responsible for cleaning up the retrovirus responsible for creation of the Dexes. He’s curing disease around the world and UltraGen is beacon of hope for humanity. Sometimes, the cure is worse than the disease.
A host of other characters await in Dex Territory. Each unique, fun and dangerous. I hope you enjoy the ride!
Did I enjoy the ride? Heck yeah I did! So much that I felt compelled to share it with y’all, my very favorite people. Read this book and remember this author’s name! Mark Aberdeen is going places – get on his “ride” now!
Personally, I LOVED the book and I can’t WAIT for the sequel (which, according to what I’ve been hearing on his Facebook fan page, is coming SOON!!).
