Just in case you weren’t clear on what it takes to be really, really happy, scientists have come up with an actual formula, thanks to recently published research.
I was kind of surprised when my husband shared a link to the study yesterday – I mean, I thought we’d already figured this one out. But no!
This study says otherwise. These guys? They’ve CRACKED THE CODE. Check out what they found. Be sure to click through at the bottom to read the full story.
Case in point: Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic is one of the world’s most prestigious health institutions. With much fanfare, researchers there announced last week that they have “cracked the code to being happy.” “Imagine scientists coming up with an actual formula for happiness—a specific recipe for lifelong contentment and joy,” they tease.
Well, my forlorn little friends, imagine no more. These scientists boast of having “created just such a formula based on neuroscience and psychology.” For a mere $15.95—less than your daily dose of Zoloft and vodka—they’ll rush off to you “The Mayo Clinic Handbook for Happiness,” a “four-step self-help process” to finding “a lifetime of joy and contentment.”
“Happiness is a habit,” says the study’s chief researcher Dr. Amit Sood in the Daily Mail. “Some of us are born with it; others have to choose it.”
“Previous research has shown that our minds are hard-wired to focus on negative experiences. For our ancestors,” continues the report, being perpetually PO’ed, “helped them stay alive, providing an evolutionary advantage in the face of danger.” (Some of us attribute this to mankind’s fallen, selfish, sinful nature, but we can go with that whole evolution thingy if it makes them feel better.)
Concludes the Daily Mail: “The book makes readers focus on a different positive emotion each day, such as gratitude, forgiveness and kindness.”
Wait. Hold the Mayo. This is dj vu all over again. What “book” are we talking about here? Where have we heard all this before—talk of gratitude, forgiveness, kindness and whatnot, leading to joy, contentment, happiness and so forth?

The first time I ever saw Rainn Wilson being…well, Rainn Wilson, he was appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul Sunday show (which I absolutely love most weeks!).
Wilson was discussing having left NBC’s wildly successful nearly decade-long sitcom, The Office, and at first, he had me laughing, as usual.
But then as the conversation between Wilson and the amazingly talented and beautiful Oprah Winfrey (y’all know I love me some Oprah!), a chord was struck, and I got all “in my feelings,” as we say in St. Louis.
Not only was he nothing like his anal-retentive, awkwardly hilarious character, but he was clearly a surprisingly light-filled being who understood creativity and self-realization on a level that impressed me.
Then he started talking about this really amazing project he’d been working on called Soul Pancake.
I was already a fan, but this development changed my whole perception of Rainn Wilson.

I love when that happens. You know, when a preconceived notion is challenged by a new way of seeing things. Don’t you?
Rainn Wilson was asked to share some lessons for living a good life. Moments later he was convulsing on the couch, showing off how he experiences “rapturous joy.”
Post-convulsion, during an appearance on HuffPost Live, he shared some poignant thoughts on happiness, his marriage, and being true to yourself.

I was doing my first Broadway play and I was terrible in it. I was bad. I had so much pressure on my shoulders. It was kind of a classic play and I thought I needed to be a certain way as an actor. And oh my god, I stunk. I was so distraught, I would be weeping in the middle of the night, calling my wife.
It was one of the hardest experiences I went through, to show up everyday to a Broadway play knowing that you suck.
Sometimes as an actor youre just in the wrong part at the wrong time. But it was mostly my belief systems that really screwed me up and then after that something broke, something cracked.
1. If you haven’t already, sign up for the challenge right here. (It’s free.) 2. Start by setting a goal for yourself to accomplish during the next 30 days, whether it’s a weight goal, a measurement goal or a visual goal. (I’ll be working on looking better in my bikini this summer, personally!)
3. Take your “before” picture, and if you’re comfortable with it, post it to the group. (Note: This group is a “secret” group, meaning that unless you’re a member, you can’t see the group or its members/content–so you can expect a certain level of privacy.) Still, keep the photos clean–wear clothing or a swimsuit in your photo, no nudity, please. Post comments, answer questions and add progress photos as often as you like to the group page. Be sure to support your fellow challengers–we’re all in this together!
4. Choose your workout plan. I suggest at least 30 minutes per day, six days per week to include cardio and strength training. I won’t define your workout plan since everyone’s fitness levels may be different, but I will share my own workout plans as well as offering suggestions for those who might struggle or need ideas.
