April Birthday? Another Excuse to Wear Diamonds!

April Birthday? Another Excuse to Wear Diamonds!

“I never hated a man enough to give him diamonds back.” ~Zsa Zsa GaborZsa_Zsa_Gabor_-_1959

If you are still young enough to admit you have birthdays and your birthday falls in April then you already know the diamond is April’s birthstones.  Celebrities who already have a love affair with diamonds are even more apt to be seen wearing diamonds if their birthday is in April.

There are many April celebrities that share the diamond birthstone with you.

But did you know that the diamond is also deep in mystical powers from ancient times?  It is said to enhance ones competence, trust and love relationships.

Diamonds also have a long history in their medicinal qualities.  During ancient times diamonds were believed to heal illness.  Diamonds were first placed into the bed to warm the diamond to enhance their healing qualities.

It is even said that over the centuries Cupid’s arrows were tipped in diamonds and thus it earned its reputation as the perfect gift of love.

The white and brilliant hues diamonds signify life, joy and innocence.  But really diamonds come in a wide range of colors other than white which includes shades of gray, brown, yellow, blue, red, and green.

Pre 1400’s diamonds were only available to those of royal blood who were the only people able to wear the symbol of courage and invincibility.  During the mid 1400s The Archduke Maximillian gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy beginning the long tradition of diamond engagement rings which is still carried on today.

The practice of wearing a diamond engagement ring on the third finger often referred to as the ring finger began in Egyptian times because it was believed the vein of love ran through this finger directly to the heart.
Besides being the birthstone for April there is no gift that is more symbolic of love than a diamond and no more convincing promise of eternal and everlasting love.

Ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars that had fallen from the sky making a visit to earth.  Others revered to diamonds as Gods Tears or dew drops.  The origin of the first diamond has never been solved and remains a mystery to geologists and sciences even today.

Initially geologists thought that India was the first river-bed source for mining diamonds.  The ancient Hindus called the diamond Vajra which means lightening.  It earned this name because of its incredible strength and the light rays it emitted.  Besides being the most beautiful gem they are also the hardest substance found on earth.  Diamonds have been mined Botswana, Australia, Russia and South Africa, and recently Canada has been added to that list.

April does have an alternative birthstone which is the opal.  Unlike diamonds which are simply crystallized carbon, opals are found deep within the earth where the intense heat develops this beautiful stone.
So even though there are many April celebrities that share the diamond birthstone with you the diamond is a celebrity and star all on its own.  Recognized back to ancient times for its symbol of love and its beautiful brilliance.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Diamonds

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Diamonds

A scattering of "brilliant" cut diam...

Diamonds have been the focus of attention for artists, writers, religions, and people in general for almost all cultures for years because they represent status, beauty, perfection and wealth.

There have been people who committed murder or will endure a great deal of trouble to steal diamonds. And there are people who will spend a great deal of money to get that perfect piece of diamond jewelry.

Diamonds are especially significant for many women especially as they represent status, beauty, and class for the wearer. Owners of the larger diamonds are held in high regard by admirers, as these people are perceived as special and high status.

In addition, various religions have recognized the symbolic beauty of the diamond and its extraordinary physical properties. But diamonds have a religious-mystical quality in various religions, such as the Diamond Sutra in Tibetan Buddhism is one of the most beloved texts.

The devotional statues of Hindu gods had diamond eyes, as diamonds were thought to be treasured gifts from the gods. The ancient Greeks also associated diamonds with the tears of their gods. In fact, the name “diamond” comes from the ancient Greek word, adamas which means invincible, because diamonds have indestructible qualities.

Diamonds also can be used as tough, abrasive tools as well as set in a stunning piece of diamond jewelry by craftspersons and jewelry designers. The reason why diamonds are so unique as they are one of the two main forms of carbon (along with graphite) they can only be scratched by other diamonds, they are a dynamic conductor of heat, and they are excellent cutting tools that are used in various industries. The solid durability and the ability of diamonds to to reflect light are qualities which make them useful for industry and for a beautiful piece of jewelry. It takes over two tons of mined ore to find a quality diamond that can be used for a good piece of jewelry, so diamonds are certainly unique and special.

A mined diamond is taken to a diamond cutter in order to be cut and shaped into a round shape to be prepared to be sold for jewelry. The cutter attempts to cut the diamond to show the reflecting light from the various facets of the cut stone. The reflecting light, or the fire, is the most important attraction of a beautifully cut diamond. Diamond cutters treat diamond cutting as an art, because the light relecting from the diamond must be cut in such a way that is attractive as possible. The job is finished when it is polished.

Over the years, there have been many well-known diamonds that have been found and named after the owners, people, or places. These diamonds are usually quite large and have a great deal of value attached to them. In addition, they have no “name brand” as an authentic diamond is a product of nature not anything manufactured. The value of the diamond is not based on where the diamond was mined: it could be in India, Russia, Africa, Canada, Australia, and other countries. Diamonds can be formed from the magma from volcanic eruptions, plates of the earth crashing together, and even more rarely from glaciers.

People often wonder how a particular piece of diamond jewelry is assigned a price tag. The use of different types of gold or platinum for the setting, the quality of the diamond, and many more factors come into play. To determine the price, a company may be called in to appraise the diamond’s properties: its weight, clarity, cut and color. When the results are finalized with the assessment of the diamond, it is then bought by a diamond dealer who will try to sell it to a professional jeweler who will in turn to sell it retail to the consumer.

If a consumer would like to get an assessment or certification for a diamond, the GIA, which is the Gemological Institute of America would be a good place to get the work done. It is considered more accurate than a jeweler. After the results, the consumer can try to read a diamond cutter’s guide to try to interpret the results. It is not advisable to try the Diamond Calculators on the Internet, as they are not considered accurate. Remember that the Diamond Grading Report is considered the main resource for the serious shopper.

In sum, we can see that diamonds probably will never lose their attraction and significance in all cultures. Today, they signify true love, hope, and promise for those seeking engagement or wedding rings. It is often a romantic and intimate occasion for couples to go shopping for rings. Luckily, there are a broad array of diamond rings suitable for many budgets. And it is a very personal choice in the selection of the diamond ring; after all, diamonds last a very long time!

Should You or Shouldn’t You? Factors in Deciding on Cosmetic Surgery

Should You or Shouldn’t You? Factors in Deciding on Cosmetic Surgery

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Various forms of cosmetic surgery exist today. All have the aim of altering the physical appearance of an individual. An implicit – sometimes explicit – part of this alteration, change or transformation is the individual’s image of themselves as well; not only how they see themselves, but how they see themselves seen by the people around them. For this reason, there are two elements at stake in cosmetic surgery: the physical and the psychological.

Valid advertisements of cosmetic surgery do not represent themselves as the be all and end all. They allow the individual to understand that it’s a complex process with many factors to consider. Even a simple goal like having a smoother stomach, can become complicated by the various procedures available.

Even then, the range of techniques. In the end, a consultation is always recommended, with a review of the various options available. As well, the attendant risks. What follows is an attempt to acquaint the reader with some of the issues regarding the procedures available. It does not explore what – if any – legal restrictions there may be depending upon where the procedure is done. For example, in Canada, there are can be regulations regarding the use of silicone in prosthetic devices, namely breast implants. The reader should also try to acquaint themselves with whatever follow-up or check-ups are necessary after the fact.

General vs. local anesthetic

If a general anesthetic is used, it is usually performed in a hospital setting. There are certain risks associated with any kind of procedure involving a general anesthetic. Regardless, a hospital stay is normally required. In contrast, a local anesthetic usually carries fewer risks and hospitalization is not required.

In-patient vs. out-patient

For the in-patient, a hospital stay is in part meant to ensure that any potential complications that can arise from the procedure can be dealth with immediately. As well, the individual will likely require a certain amount of rest and recovery in a hospital setting. In contrast, the out-patient can go home after the procedure should no complications arise. Regardless, having a qualified physician performing the procedure in a sterile, controlled setting is critical.

The health of the individual

The individual should be in good general health. Procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks are not meant for the purpose of weight loss as much as what’s known as body contouring. Also, pregnancy can be a factor in precluding one from most procedures.

What you should avoid

  • Smoking a few weeks before and after the procedure. This is because smoking affects the blood’s circulation and can hamper the body’s ability to heal.
  • Excessive exercise, dieting and heavy physical acitivity after the procedure. Again, this can affect the individual’s ability to recover. The former two should also be avoided prior to the procedure.
  • Certain types of medication can also seriously affect your ability to recover. For example, anticoagulants should be avoided if undergoing liposuction.
