Man, I hate marathon cleaning. You know, when you suddenly look around and realize that your house is totally trashed and you have people coming over? Yeah. It used to happen to me a few times a year. Often it was the kids’ birthday parties that caused it.

Ah, yes, those lovely pre-guest cleaning marathons we’ve all indulged in once or twice…

Or 30 times. Either way. 

You know how it goes: you invited people over a month ago and kept telling yourself you’d just clean next weekend…And before you know it, you have exactly 27 hours before your guests will arrive. And at least two of those guests are guaranteed to judge the shot out of you (at least you think so).

 So you spend the next 27 hours cleaning like a mad woman, and everywhere you look, you see more dirt. It’s like someone put a spotlight on it and you can’t bear the thought of your mother/sister/super OCD friend might see that you’re the worst housekeeper on the planet…

But hold up: I have good news for you, my darling. You can be lazy AND have a house that stays relatively clean – one that stays “drop in clean” (clean enough that you could have a friend or neighbor drop by unannounced and feel comfortable inviting them in.

Even better, this kind of method can ensure that you never do the exhausting overnight cleaning marathon that inevitably causes you to be miserable during the actual event. 

So here it is, my lazy sisters, the only guide you’ll ever need to keep your house clean without too much stress or effort.

The Lazy Girl’s Guide to a Clean House

  1. Get microfiber towels. They clean almost anything without streaks including mirrors and glass. No Windex needed.
    Wipe down the shower or tub with a microfiber cloth after each use. Same goes for the bathroom and kitchen sink.
  2. Vacuum the middles. Like weekly. Most of the time, you can get by with vacuuming weekly or biweekly, and you can get away with not moving the furniture for a month or more if you’re careful.
  3. Clean off a spot. Bare surfaces make your house look cleaner. I k ow, it’s hard to believe, but try cleaning off one table or counter in your house. I mean take every single thing off of it. Go ahead, I’ll wait. (Did you do it?? See what I’m talking about?)
  4. Beware of knick knacks. I’m just saying: it’s a lot easier to wipe off a table with a vase and a couple of candles than one covered with Precious Moments collection-type stuff. Put those in a glass case if you must display them – they will never get dusty.
  5. Only eat in the kitchen and dining areas of your home. This might feel a little unnatural at first but imagine the stains you could avoid on your couch and carpet. Plus it’ll do you some good with your eating habits.
  6. Don’t smoke or burn incense in the house. Anything that makes your house dusty or dirty or stinky should be avoided if you’re trying to keep your house clean the lazy girl way. That leads me to my next point, actually.
  7. Don’t make a mess in the first place. Clean up after yourself as you go. make a rule for yourself that you don’t leave messes behind. Fact is that it can get overworked if you let it go too long. Look, it is 100 percent easier to keep a house clean than to clean a dirty house. So get it clean once and stay on top of it. Then you’ll never have to do those 27-hour-pre-party cleaning marathons again.

  1. Oven cleaner takes soap scum out of an old tub like it was nothing. Make sure the bathroom is vented and keep the kids away. Spray down the scummy spots, wait 10 minutes and wipe clean with a wash cloth or sponge.
  2. Use old shampoo to clean the toilet. It’s made to handle organic material and it works in the old loo. Same for the bathroom sink. 
  3. Toothpaste will shine silver. This includes jewelry and silverware.
  4. A Swiffer WetJet mop is awesome, but I recently switched to a reusable Libman mop that lets me use my own floor cleaner and has washable pads. It makes cleaning up a spill super convenient.

Experts say that you spend roughly one-third of your life sleeping. Certainly, you want to make every moment count toward the physical and mental rejuvenation that a good sleep provides! So, how can you enjoy a restful night of slumber?

Put these 8 tips into action now to experience some of the best sleep of your life:

Investigate your evening routine. Think about the activities you’re involved in from the time you walk in the door to the moment your head hits the pillow. The goal is to increase your awareness about what you’re doing and see if it could be interrupting your sleep.

  • Are you playing catch-up by bringing work home from the office? If so, your mind may be on overdrive and unable to turn off.
  • Do you find yourself consumed with doing household chores like laundry and house-cleaning? In that case, you’re probably lacking time for relaxation.

Plan to be in bed with the lights out for at least eight hours. Do you stay up until after midnight? Try to schedule evening activities early, so you can still get eight hours of sleep.

  • If you have trouble falling asleep, you might want to make it eight and a half hours.

Allow time to unwind. If you’re super busy, you’ll probably be rushing around until you finally collapse on the bed in hopes of getting a few winks.

  • Instead, give yourself at least an hour to shift gears and relax before bed. Everyone needs some downtime.

Clear your mind from the day’s chaos. Maybe it’s reading your kids a bedtime story or taking 20 minutes to meditate. Focus on shifting your thoughts from the intense to the trivial. A tranquil mind invites more sleep than a chaotic one.

Create an uncluttered, relaxing bedroom environment. Although you may think that a cluttered bedroom is benign, it may be preventing relaxation and interfering with your sleep. Besides, clutter draws dust, which can cause breathing difficulties during the night.

  • The first step is to put everything away. Clothes can go into drawers or the closet. Put junk mail and magazines into the recycling bin.
  • The second step is to organize what you have left. Place a lamp, reading materials, and your alarm clock on your night stand. Set the scene for a comfortable night’s slumber.
  • The third step is dusting. Use a damp cloth and clean all the surfaces in your bedroom each week to ensure an environment where you can breathe easily. If you spend just 15 minutes dusting and tidying your bedroom, you can prevent future clutter.

Turn off electronics at least one hour before bed. The light emanating from backlit screens like cell phones, tablets, and e-readers can trick your body into thinking it’s daylight and time to be awake. Plus, it’s best to rest your eyes from such gadgets before trying to sleep.

Take a warm bath rather than a shower. If you tend to struggle with sleep quality, it may be that your shower routine is invigorating you rather than relaxing you. Sitting for a few minutes in warm water can help your muscles relax and prepare for sleep.

Practice breathing in bed. Take deep breaths through your nose, hold them for five to eight seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Do four of these breaths after you switch off the lights, and you’ll feel your body immediately relax.

Adopt these practices will help you create a restful bedtime routine. When you establish consistent relaxation habits, your body will become accustomed to them, and restful sleep will follow. Soon, you’ll be sawing logs with the best of them. Sweet dreams!
