The Facebook Test: How to Tell If You’re a Negative Person

VictimDo you consider yourself a positive person? Do you think others see you as a positive person? How would you like an opportunity to look at a cross-section of your life to get a feel for how you present yourself and how people perceive you?

Great news–I’ve got the answer, and it won’t cost you a cent. Let’s start here.

I posted this status on Facebook today.

So, it’s not always what you thought it would be. You have two choices: 1. Bitch, moan and make it so much worse with your negative attitude. OR 2. Change your mind, change your perspective–change your whole life with a better attitude and perception of the situation. Feel me?

It was in response to a variety of mini-conversations I’ve had, seen and read/overheard during the past week or so–many of them on Facebook. The fact is that many people are so negative in their thinking and speaking that they don’t give themselves a chance to succeed.

Imaginary Protagonist: Brutus the Blowhard

Take for example my imaginary friend, Brutus, who writes a blog about positivity and actively engages in the community. On the outside, Brutus appears to be a go-getter, a real winner. But, indulge me for a moment here, let’s look a little deeper.

When we look at Brutus’ Facebook test, we see that a large percentage of what Brutus is posting about (and what people are responding to) is focused on the problems in his life–whether they’re financially motivated, relationship-charged or even related to extended family, friends or co-workers, it seems that someone’s always trying to steal his sunshine.

Given this news, Brutus, though initially in denial and a little frustrated by the results, he might start to change his life for the better in major ways–starting with the way he thinks and the thoughts he puts out into the universe.

How to Perform the Facebook Test on Yourself

The Facebook Test is a simple and easy-to-perform test that requires no special tools.

1. To start, all you need to do is login to your Facebook profile and look at your cover photo. In the lower right-hand corner, you’ll see a box that says “Activity Log.” Click it.

2. In the left side menu, click the “your posts” link.

3. Scroll through your posts for the most recent month. Count how many were of a positive nature (as in they focused on the kind of life you WANT and not what you don’t want) and record that number.

4. Now count how many were of a negative nature (as in they discussed problems, concerns and worries you have about things that have gone or could go wrong in your life and record that number.

5. Which number is greater and by how much? When your positive number higher than your negative number, you’re on the right track. If your positive number is, in relation to your negative number, significantly higher, you’re pulling into the right station.

6. Repeat the above steps on the other sections, such as posts you’re tagged in, posts you’ve hidden, posts you’ve liked, posts by others, etc. This will give you an idea of how others perceive you.

Tally It Up

So how did you do? What does your score tell you about yourself? Are you a positive or a negative person? What are you going to do about it? Share your results in the comments section, below.
