“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” ~Coco Chanel
When I first met Jane Cuddehe, I liked her right away. She was a really cool, sophisticated and stylish lady who also happened to be pretty down-to-earth. What more could you ask for?
And when she told me she was the owner and creative force behind Scialle Fine Shawls, I was impressed–especially by the tales of visiting Italy and having her designs produced in the same factories that high-end designers such as Armani are produced in.
The photos she shared were amazing! (Stay tuned–I have permission to share them with you in an upcoming post!)
But even though I liked her so much and was so impressed by her business accomplishments and sense of style, I wasn’t sure about her line of scarves. While I thought they were absolutely gorgeous, the price point was a little beyond my accessories budget. (I’m a high-low fashionista–I only buy certain “high-end” and designer items. For trendier pieces, I tend to stick to the lower price-point).
Still, given how much I admire Jane’s style, I thought I’d give them a try. After all, a scarf can really be timeless.
So I got two–a red one and a black and white scarf made of a fine wool (this one’s currently on sale!). The red one is no longer available on the site, but it looks just like this large pink Unito scarf, except red. I’m not sure what it’s made of but I’m guessing a fine linen. It’s really light and super soft–and drapes like a dream.
Now, once I got the scarves, I loved them. They are beautiful and so large that you can wear them in tons of ways (as I outlined in my original review).
But after owning them awhile, I have found that not only are they stylish and easy to wear, but they are functional as well. Since the weather in St. Louis has been particularly arctic this year, I’ve been layering more.
And as someone who is all about looking stylish, no matter the weather, I’m not a big fan of puffy and unflattering winter wear. But with my more stylish coats and jackets, I don’t always feel warm enough.
So lately I’ve been grabbing one of the Scialle shawls, and here’s the thing: even though they are so light and soft and easy to wear, they actually somehow offer a huge amount of warmth–but they don’t make me sweat.
I know it sounds silly to be surprised that a scarf can make me feel so warm, but I was truly shocked. So there you go–one more reason I am in love with Scialle. <3
Good news! You can currently get a variety of Scialle scarves on the cheap! Check out the sale, right here.
Professional teeth whitening is becoming the increasingly popular choice for anybody with stained teeth.
Yes, you can buy over the counter remedies, but if you want to guarantee whiter teeth now, then professional teeth whitening is the best option.
Professional teeth whitening does not produce different results from the ‘at-home’ products you can buy, but there are distinct advantages.
Firstly, you can be confident that you are in the hands of a professional who knows what they are doing, and secondly, the whitening effects are immediate.
It is a matter of personal choice how many visits it will take to get your teeth professionally whitened. Your teeth will show a change of color after a one-hour visit, but you may want more than this. If you wish to achieve optimal whiteness it may be necessary to attend between two and six times.
Teeth can become stained for a variety of reasons. Food and drink with strong colorings cause stains, most commonly tea and coffee. Smoking gives the teeth a yellowish appearance. Disease and medicine can also cause teeth to become stained, and our teeth naturally become darker as we age. These are all reasons that send us to get professional teeth whitening.
The first thing your dentist will establish is whether it is in your best interests to have professional teeth whitening. There may be circumstances that you haven’t considered – for example, if you have tooth colored fillings your teeth may look unnatural if you have them professionally whitened. You may discover that having a professional dental clean is all that you need. Removing the tartar and stains from your teeth can improve their appearance and color, making professional teeth whitening unnecessary.
Having established that your teeth are clean and that professional teeth whitening is the right treatment for you, the dentist will show you the different shades of whiteness that can be achieved with professional teeth whitening. The dentist will consult with you using a porcelain tab (shaped like teeth) to establish which shade of white is right for you.
The dentist will usually polish your teeth before beginning the professional teeth whitening procedure to ensure that all surface stains have gone. The dentist will then isolate the teeth that are going to be whitened with a thin sheet of latex or a special gel that provides a seal around the teeth.
The tooth whitener/bleacher is then applied and left on for the period of time necessary to achieve the previously agreed results. Depending on which technique the dentist has chosen, a laser, heat or light source may be used to help activate the bleaching agent.
Professional teeth whitening can last for a few years or as little as six months. Quite often your lifestyle determines how long your treatment will last.
However, there is no doubt that professional teeth whitening can return a person’s self-esteem. Why not pay a visit to your dentist to establish whether professional teeth whitening could be right for you?
“Every relationship needs an argument every now and then. Just to prove that it is strong enough to survive. Long-term relationships, the ones that matter, are all about weathering the peaks and the valleys.” ~Melchor Lim
All relationships, whether romantic or not, have their fair share of disagreement and conflict. But it’s especially true of familial relationships. It’s challenging to resolve the disagreement and effectively relieve the associated tension. However, resolving conflict is critical to the health of any relationship.
How successful have you been at coming to a mutual agreement when there’s been disagreement?
Try the following ideas the next time conflict arises:
1. Adopt an attitude of seeking a solution – not trying to win. It’s important to keep the goal in mind, and the goal is not to prove that you’re ‘right.’ The goal is to understand the other’s point of view, communicate your own, and then search for a solution that meets both of your needs.
* If the goal is to win, the relationship suffers. In a great relationship, both of you should feel safe expressing your discontent and trust that resolving the issue will make the relationship better.
2. Speak up before something becomes a major issue. If he’s driving you crazy by not replacing the cap on the toothpaste, bring up before it’s happened for the 50th time and you’re on the verge of screaming. We all wish others could read our minds at times, but to date, no one has been proven to have that ability.
* Avoid saving all of your hurts as ammunition to be fired during the next fight. Doing so only makes it more challenging to find middle ground. Bring up the issues as they occur.
3. Be clear about what’s bothering you. Be specific and address the behavior. Saying, “I get upset when you leave your dirty clothes all over the floor. I would be happier if you put them in the hamper.” will go over better than, “Why can’t you pick up your clothes?”
* Address the behavior. Avoid attacking the person. When you attack the person, they will attempt to justify and defend themselves. Little will be resolved this way. Remember that you’re upset by what they are actually doing, so limit your complaint to that.
* What’s the real issue? Exaggerations, generalizations, and half-truths simply create more issues. For example, if your spouse claims to be upset about your traveling for work, maybe they’re really upset about the stagnant status of their own career.
4. Listen to the response. Often times, the person that’s upset isn’t in the mood to listen. If you want to solve your dilemma, you must listen to make progress. Remind the other person to address the behavior and not let it become personal.
5. Now it’s time to seek a solution. After you’ve both had a chance to present your perspective, brainstorm a solution together. Be willing to compromise, but that doesn’t mean you have to give in. Giving in just postpones the fight to another day. Be ready to forgive and move on when a solution is reached.
* Avoid involving others that are part of the disagreement. It really doesn’t matter what your mother thinks or her best friend believes. It’s between the two of you. Strive to keep it that way.
Fighting fair isn’t just the loving thing to do. It’s also the best way to reach an agreement and diffuse the situation. You’ll know that that a good solution has been reached when both parties are satisfied and the issue doesn’t come up again in the future. Make an effort to fight fair and you’ll enjoy stronger, more loving relationships.

Thirty-five is when you finally get your head together and your body starts falling apart. ~Caryn Leschen
Humans are, by nature, a bit obsessed with beauty.
Part of it has nothing to do with our personal beliefs or convictions–some of our obsession is coded into our DNA, an evolutionary urge to create with and be with beautiful people.
That’s because beauty is an evolutionary cue that a person is healthy.
But what happens when beauty begins to fade as we get older?
The truth is we begin the aging process just as soon as we pop out of the womb. Every day of our lives our bodies slough off and regenerate new cells. The speed at which that process takes place when we are children is vastly different as we get older.
Every day you are bombarded daily with commercial messages and beauty tips that attempt to lure you into believing that the most recent miracle drug is just what you need to fight off the ravages of Mother Nature.
And these days, humans are, on average, living longer. Of course, that can be a curse or a blessing, depending on your perspective.
So what’s the best way to stay younger and healthier looking? Start with prevention.
The best route to natural beauty and healthy skin is to take care of what you have. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? The truth is that your skin takes a beating from the environment every single day. Here are some of our favorite beauty tips for keeping your skin fresh and healthy:
1: Stay hydrated and do it with plenty of water! That does not mean soda, caffeine or any other type of liquid, even if it is low cal. Soda (even diet soda) has a high concentration of sodium. Sodium retains fluids. You need fluid that will hydrate and flush your body free of toxins. Make sure you are drinking at least 8 glasses a day!
2: Protect your skin from harmful ultra violet (UV) rays. We all love the sun. We love being in it and we love having a beautiful tan. The truth is you can poison yourself with too much sunshine. UV rays cause skin cancer and if that isn’t bad enough it causes your skin to age faster than it should, contributing to unsightly wrinkles. If you must play in the sun, make certain you are using an adequate sun screen. Don’t leave home without it!
3: Keep your skin clean. Use a soft warm cloth. Skin does not require scrubbing. You will do more harm than good if you do.
4: The best cure for wrinkles is to never have them in the first place! If you are like most of us, you didn’t listen to your Mom when she tried to tell you to stay in the shade, stand up straight and stop squinting!
5: Eat healthy. Knowing how and what to eat, can make a huge difference in how you feel. Improper eating habits can cause depression, weight gain, illness and an overall lethargy.
Weight gain causes your skin to stretch. As you get older, it loses it’s elasticity and you’re left with sagging skin.
The best solution to this is to maintain a proper weight.
A rule of thumb for eating habits are…don’t eat more calories than you consume. Don’t go one single day without doing something extra and physical for at least 30 minutes per day. This can be three ten minute walks. Or 30 minutes of vigorous aerobics, or 12 minutes of weight lifting and 18 minutes of walking.
6: Don’t worry, be happy. A happy outlook appears to trigger the release of endorphins. Endorphins relax the cardiovascular system and cytokines which alert the immune system to pay attention in detecting abnormalities like cancer cells. Listen carefully to yourself. If you have put yourself down since childhood, over a lifetime, negative subliminal messages can take their toll by turning you into a pessimist. Spend one week writing down the phrases you use in your “self talk.” Chances are you will find that you repeat a dozen or so phrases over and over again that reinforce that negative image. If you know about them, you can change them. Outer beauty and inner joy go hand in hand.
Here are a few quick tips for increasing joy, hope and optimism that will work no matter what your age:
Make a list of at least 50 great things that happen to you every day.
Laugh a lot. You’ll heal your body and your mind.
Discover a new challenge each month.
Try meditating for just five minutes each day.
7: Sex After 50 – Ha! How many of you jumped ahead to this section?
Ok, so I’m not quite 40, let alone 50, yet. But the importance of physical intimacy as a relationship matures actually depends on the couple. An alarming number of men used to give up on sex after 60 and many women used to feel that their sex life ended with menopause. Thankfully, that is no longer the case.
Sex at middle age can actually become better and more satisfying than ever before. Maturity gives a couple more experience in lovemaking. The children are usually grown and left home. The pressures of building a career and day to day life are usually less stressful than in younger years.
Is beauty really skin deep?
The answer is yes and no. It’s a paradox, isn’t it? True beauty begins from the inside out. Don’t you wish there was some way to “wriggle your nose” and regain that soft skin you had as a child? Well, until someone comes up with the true “Fountain of Youth” we are stuck with what we have.
Just remember that getting older doesn’t have to mean getting old. What are your best beauty tips for looking younger?
