“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” ~Mignon McLaughlin
Alright, maybe I’m gushing here, but one of the best parts of marriage for me is falling in love with the same man over and over again.
Today happens to be my birthday, and it’s the 12th one I’ve celebrated with my husband, Bill. Our relationship has been an ever-evolving one, and lucky for us, it has actually improved over time.
Well, lucky may be the wrong word–because I’m here to tell you that marriage is hard work. There are easy days, sure, but it’s not the easy days that I’m talking about. It’s the hard times–they can literally make or break a marriage.
Don’t get me wrong, Bill and I have struggled. It’s not all hearts and flowers; being married means seeing a person warts and all and still loving him. It means being able to be naked in every sense of the word together and to still be comfortable.
It’s something that you don’t run into every day, and I’m very grateful to have this kind of love in my life.
Today, Bill posted The Best Birthday Message Ever on my Facebook wall, and I just have to share it with you.
My Dearest Angie,
Today is your birthday. And while I know we are in the middle of making plans for a new life somewhere else and we stand at a certain crossroad in our life together, I want you to know how I feel today and always and why I celebrate you. Today I’m reminded that our relationship is special, because we chose each other over all others. You have helped me create the best family any man could hope for.
I know we’ve shared a lot of ups and downs and laughs and cries and kisses and shouts and there may be times where things become commonplace, tense, hard-as-hell, or even downright frightening. I thank you for being strong when I couldn’t be and letting me be strong when you need me to be. I know at times, I can be frustrating, annoying, and something-less-than-lovable but I thank you as you continue to stand by me.
I know we may butt heads on occasion but I hope you always know how much I respect, admire, and adore you.
I intend to continue to be the husband you desire, the father our children need and the man my family can lean on.
If I had the choice to do it all over again. I would. Every high, every low, every minute again.
I love you that much.
Happy Birthday Angie.
That’s what I’m talking about. 🙂 Happy birthday to me!
